Winter Weather Trends

Winter weather can mean freezing cold and blizzard conditions in parts of the country, while Alabama is not exempt from these conditions they are a rarity t the state and do not reflect the normal weather patterns. In Alabama you can find more mild conditions throughout the winter season. Alabama is in a mild sub tropical zone in the country. Winter days can vary from needing a light jacket to wearing shorts. The normal high temperatures are around 60-degress Fahrenheit with the lows going down into the 40-s. Some days there is plenty of sun even in the middle of winter. Because of the states location northern Alabama can has vastly different temperatures then the southern part of the state. The north will have certain times in the winter where they actually get a frost, while this is a rare occurrence in the south.
Snow is a rare occurrence in Alabama, but in January of 2011 the state was in emergency when a snow storm hit it, and hit it hard. Airports were closed, flight cancelled, and students got a rare snow day off from school. The state was pelted with snow, rain, and freezing rain making the roads very dangerous. When these storms actually move into the state it is record book worthy as there are not many in recorded history.
The vast variations from one section of the state to another are what make Alabama-s winter climate so unique. The state has seen its share of cold snaps, where temperatures drop dangerously below the norm. Winter weather awareness is something the state has promoted over the years, because when residents do not know how to handle these situations tragedy can occur. In 1982 20-people died from the cold weather that moved over most of the state.
