As Alabama moves into December, expect temperatures to dip and precipitation levels to rise as we enter the full force of Winter. Though Alabama Winters may be mild compared to much of the country, use caution as many residents are caught off guard by snow and ice. It is too early to tell what the month will specifically hold, but particularly in northern Alabama, December marks the beginning of the time of year in which snow and or ice is most likely to occur.Starting south, in Mobile, average high temperatures tend to hover around the mid to low 60s. As the month progresses, average temperatures slightly dip, starting at 66 degrees Fahrenheit on December 1st sliding downwards towards 61 degrees on New Year’s Eve. Of course, these are just historic trends, and as with any statistical grouping, one is vulnerable to outliers. The all time high in Mobile for the month of December is 81 degrees with an all-time low of just 8 degrees. This 73 degree range is quite the extreme, so while you should be prepared for anything, don’t expect any consistent temperatures towards either end of the record book. The average precipitation level in Mobile falls right in between the averages for October and November. November tops out at 5.41 inches while October trends to a modest 3.25. December typically sees 4.66 inches of precipitation, from rain to a wintry mix, though in South Alabama snow is an off-year occurrence. Read the rest of this entry »
